Ka Hā O Nā Kūpuna

Ka Hā O Nā Kūpuna

My dear friend and mentor, Koko, has been appearing to Sarah and me quite often lately.

I truly believe this is a good sign!

As we're preparing for October, so many things are happening.

Big changes ...

... all good!

So many wonderful learning experiences have presented themselves these past two years ... even though it's been a "roller-coaster-ride" ... spiritual evolution is always a blessing.

In recent weeks I've been re-connecting with many Hawaiian Kupuna.

When I announced the opening of "The Secret Vault" plan for this Fall, I had NO idea how powerful it is going to be.

"Never cease to be amazed!"

Let me give you another hint of things to come:

Ka Ha O Na Kupuna

The sacred breath of life, the spirit of our ancestors.

Na Kuleana O Hawaii is presenting The Kupuna Tour ... an evening of wisdom and the essence of life.

"Come join us as we share together
in the ways of our forefathers!"

Here is their basic "mission statement."

Ka Hā O Nā Kūpuna

The Hawaiian identity, our unique and precious way of life has been passed on from generation to generation through the ha of our kupuna.

The word “alo-ha” is a combination of two words: alo meaning ones’ front, face, or presence and ha – the sacred breath of life. It was the custom of our kupuna to exchange ha by pressing noses together and exhale, thus exchanging each others’ ha upon greeting.

In Hawai’i still today, breath is considered sacred. As Tutu Elizabeth Pa Chai says, “Breath is important because when God created man He – ha – breathed him into life.”

The sacred breath of life passed on from our ancestors is vibrantly alive in our greatest living treasures and resources: our kupuna still living today. Within them lies the essence of our Hawaiian identity. This sacred ha is what they desperately want to impart to us before it is too late. It is this very breath that sustains us through our language, and our cultural values, world view and beliefs.

The ha of our ancestors also includes the native intelligence, the talents, skills, and abilities that enabled our ancestors to cross thousands of miles of open ocean without navigational instruments; that same kind of intellectual genius enabled them to thrive and flourish in our island home.

We have a right and a responsibility to ensure that the ha of our ancestors live on in us so that our ‘ohana, our families, can once again live, breathe, move and have our being rooted in our Hawaiian identity.

The wealth of knowledge to be imparted by our precious kupuna will nourish our Hawaiian souls; it will be the most precious gift that we have to share with the world.

You can help by contacting http://kahaonakupuna.com/ and telling 'em Vince sent you!

I got an email from Pali Jae Lee encouraging me to do my part to share Koko's vision with the world. It is beautifully outlined in her book Ho'opono.

She is actively spreading his message of Aloha, but the 'Ohana Paia-Kapela-Willis no longer meets ... they have not met since Koko died.

So ... since Koko hanai'd me, I would be one of the hanai (adopted) member of the 'Ohana Paia-Kapela-Willis, and obligated to do my part to help in any way I can.

Because so much is going on "behind-the-scenes," I may not be posting as often as usual ... but all good things will come to those who wait ;->

Keep studying!

Huna Code Words: Some Simple Basics

Max Freedom Long realized that the Hawaiian Kahuna must have had special words in their language to use to teach their beliefs to the younger priests. He began to study any words in the Hawaiian dictionary which might have to do with man's mental or spiritual nature.

He immediately found unmistakable words which describe the "parts of mind," as they are called in modern psychology.

After years of searching, he had started to learn the secret lore. Years passed before he found a "code" hidden in their language which told what they believed. This "code" aided him in discovering similar beliefs in other civilizations.

This code was built on a language which must have been identical phonetically to the language of the Huna tribes while they were in Egypt. In some of the lands visited by the migrating Huna tribes words of their language were left behind. Often these words became modified.

Fortunately, the Kahuna in Hawaii preserved their language with great care, because within their language lay a "code" which described their secret system.

If the language had been changed, key words would have been modified and the code would have never been preserved.

In order to keep their language pure, young Kahuna were trained to memorize long chants covering the history of the people and the genealogy of the chiefs on the surface. The deeper, hidden meaning behind these chants revealed the secret system translated by the Esoteric Code of the Kahuna. So if, while chanting these genealogies and legendary histories, a young priest changed a word, syllable, or a pronunciation, he was immediately corrected by the older Kahunas. As a result, the language in Hawaii remained unchanged over thousands of years.

Language modifications occurred in New Zealand and, to a greater degree, in Tahiti. But the Hawaiian language remained the purest and was the language Long used to find the key words to break the code and recover the ancient techniques of the Hawaiian Kahuna. His findings have been confirmed and supplemented by the work of Leinani Mellville.

The Hawaiian, like other Polynesian dialects, is a simple language. It is not agglutinated and does not change words to make tense or gender or number, instead it uses special words to show these changes. Hawaiian words are built from short root words, which together describe the full meaning of the idea. Since many root words have multiple meanings, it was ideal for a code language.

Max found that by translating each root, he could find the hidden meaning, or code meaning, of the key words in the Kahuna chants.

What complicated the breaking of the code is that certain words were used as the symbol of some part or element of the Huna system. If the symbolic meaning was not known, the true meaning of the statement could not be understood until recently.

For instance, in early Egypt the little pictured glyph of a grasshopper is to be found in the tombs with the mummy.

In Hawaii , the grasshopper was also a symbol for the same concept.

The Hawaiian word for grasshopper is unihipili. The definition given in the Andrews "Hawaiian-English Dictionary" of 1865 is "one name of a class of gods, while Aumakua is another. They were departed spirits of decomposed persons." Only by translating and considering the meaning of the roots of the words can one get at the real Huna meaning. It was the word used by the kahuna to indicate what we call the subconscious. None of the roots have anything to do with a grasshopper or with spirits or with a mummy of the deceased, but they all describe some characteristic of the subconscious mind.

The root pili means "united or joining" or "belonging to a person," and "to adhere to something." The subconscious is "joined to" and "belongs to" the body of the man. The root nihi describes "secretiveness, working silently and softly." The subconscious mind is certainly silent. The root u means a self, an "I."

The priests had an alternate word, uhinipili, for the subconscious, which repeats some of the root words, but contains others which provide additional meanings.

Uhi carries the meaning of "a weak voice, which is smothered by another voice." Another meaning is "to hide or be secretive." All these descriptions aptly describe the subconscious mind and the way it works. They show that it is secretive, that it is closely attached to the conscious mind, that it will do things only when it wishes to do so, and that it also hides things, such as complexes, and is the center of the emotions.

Uhane is Hawaiian for the conscious mind. U means a "self” and hane means "to talk." The root words gave the description of the conscious mind, the self which talks. The human being is the only animal which is able to talk to convey ideas.

These examples show the method used in finding the hidden meanings in words used by the Kahuna. The code was really quite simple. The separate meanings of the root words describe the idea that is hidden in the word.

The Hawaiian code word for the Super-conscious is Aumakua.

Makua means "parental" or "a pair of gods," and it is the "parental" part of man. The roots also mean "very old." The translation for the word aumakua given by a student of Hawaiian lore is "utterly trustworthy parental spirit." The Hawaiian dictionary translates the word as "one who can be trusted as a child trusts a parent."

One could call the super-conscious: "God who is trusted to love the subconscious and conscious with whom it is connected." It will help us and guide us throughout our life.

Huna 101: The Basics

Huna Teachings

The Huna teachings are the Ancient "Secret Science Behind Miracles" that has finally come to the West through the work of Max Freedom Long and others.

Long initially learned about the teachings of Huna from William Tufts Brigham who had spent forty years living in Hawaii, trying to understand the secrets of the lost and secret teachings of the Hawaiian Kahuna.

Long spend the next forty years studying and working with the Huna teachings, until his death in 1971. The work has now passed-down to Rev. James Vinson Wingo, DD, who is the International head of Max Freedom Long's Huna Research Associates and High Priest of the Huna Fellowship.

It teaches the practical application of Huna and many other Kahuna techniques.

The essence of Huna teachings is that the human being is made up of three levels of consciousness, known as selves, or minds. The Kahuna called the conscious mind the "uhane," or middle self. The "middle self" is that part of you that is conscious of its own existence and has the ability to reason. It also has the free will to create as it pleases, along with the inner self, or "low self. "

The subconscious mind is called the "unihipili" or low self. It is the part of you that is unconscious. It is the storehouse of all memory and the seat of the emotions. Its is the "inner child" of pop psychology and the New Age movement. with only simplistic, deductive reasoning.

The term "low" has no reference to rank or importance, only to the fact that it is below the level of consciousness of the middle self and to the fact that its bodily center is in the solar plexus rather than in the head.

The third part is the High Self, called the "Aumakua" by the Kahuna.

The high self is the "utterly trust-worthy parental spirit."

This higher part of you lives at a higher plane of consciousness, outside the physical body. It will not intervene in the affairs of life unless asked to do so.

This is understood to be a cosmic law your High Self must adhere to.

The high self can see into the "crystallized future" and creates your future "automatically" from your day-to-day thoughts.

As you thoughts change throughout your daily life, so your future likewise change.

Huna also teaches that communication with your High Self occurs quite naturally during sleep. It is in that contact that most of the thoughts-of-the-day are used by the High Self to materialize conditions in your future.

Huna teachings say that each of the three selves is equally important, and has its proper role to perform in the life of the individual. Your health, and happiness depend on the integration, blending, and harmonizing of your three selves.

Huna teaches that your High Self expresses ALL the Divine qualities … compassion ... patience ... love ... and forgiveness.

This is the IDEAL to which you, the middle self, are to aspire.

Huna Truth: Secret History Exposed!

"Huna" is NOT a Hawaiian "religion!"

Aloha y'all,

I wholeheartedly support the study of Hawaiian spiritual systems because the Hawaiian people are beautiful, loving, generous and spiritual people with much to offer. That is just one of the reasons I passed though all three of the known Orders of Kahuna you may have heard about in Huna prior to advancing.

"Huna"

Before Max Freedom Long revealed his discoveries, Hawaiians did not call their spiritual system "Huna," which merely means "hidden" when used in simple every-day conversation.

The Ancient Hawaiian spiritual beliefs were completely woven into the fabric of their lives ... and there was no single Hawaiian word for their religion or for their religious practices.

But that all changed with the publication of "Recovering the Ancient Magic" ...

... one of the most important books you can read if you want to make some amazing discoveries for yourself.

Because so many have overlooked the original work on Huna, a number of mis-conceptions arose about Max Freedom Long and Huna which are still perpetuated today by well-meaning Hawaiians who follow some of the old ways.

You might even be able to find differences between "Huna" and some parts of Ancient Hawaiian Religion, culture, beliefs, etc. This is especially true if you looked only on the surface.

But Huna is not a Hawaiian Religion.

HUNA was the name given by Max Freedom Long to the SYSTEM he recovered and synthesized during over fifty years of research with the help and cooperation of Kahuna
on various islands
and with the help of volunteers throughout the world.

Here's "the Big Secret" of Huna!

HUNA was developed FOR people raised within Modern, Western culture as a practical system of psychology and magic ... so it is based on PROCESS ... the process behind the TECHNIQUES rather than the specific outer teachings, rituals, and stories of the Kahuna of ancient Hawaii, who for centuries kept them as their closely guarded secrets.

Max chose the word Huna (the Hawaiian word for "secret") in the 1930's to describe the psychological/religious METHODS used by the Kahuna ("Keepers of the Secret") in performing their particular kinds of "miracles" or "magic."

So Huna was developed to teach MODERN MAN in Western Culture how to perform the same kind of miracles ... such as:

  • Healing the Sick.

  • Solving personal problems.

  • Untangling financial and social difficulties.

  • ... even changing the future.

Certified Huna Practitioners perform these same functions.

... which is especially important to understand given renewed interest in Morrnah Simeona's updated Huna technique of Self I-Dentity Ho'oponopono.

Huna, as properly defined and shared, is all about sharing workable techniques you can easily use to guide you in the process of uncovering and mastering your own hidden resources ... instead of playing following-the-leader.

That means the real teaching comes from within yourself ... and not from ANY so-called "authority."

So ... as I'm always emphasizing ...

... "you choose!"

Waking Up to a World of Wonders

OK,

We've talked about "psychic sleep" on the Huna Ohana group ... the strange state of "hypnotized humanity" ...

... most people are "hypnotized" ... living one great nightmare they mistake for reality.

We've talked about dissolving the false self and living your True Self.

So "climb aboard!"

Begin your adventure along the Mystic Kahuna Path with a totally receptive mind.

And start "right where you are!"

This is of the utmost importance ... you must not assume that you are spiritually awake.

You have already seen that one of the "smoothest tricks" of the false self is to deceive us into thinking that your present state is a conscious one.

Alertness in exterior affairs has no connection with psychic awareness!

Exterior abilities are on the physical plane, but psychic skills are on a higher spiritual level.

--- Original Message ---

> I have wondered what is wrong with myself
> and other people. The idea of psychic sleep
> makes perfect sense. Why else would thousands
> of people march off to senseless war? I want
> to know more.

Don't be concerned if it's not clear to you now because that's merely indicating that you have not yet escaped far enough to distinguish the difference between "sleeping" and "awakened" states.

Because ...

... when you are in "psychic sleep" you can't possibly see what is meant by wakefulness until you actually "wake up."

You see ... awakening is the most "different" event a person can experience!

"How to Wake Up to a World of Wonders"

Now we come to the single most important technique on the Mystic Kahuna Path.

With persistent practice, you can turn into a new person.

It's simple AND dynamic!

"Self-Observation"

Before you can tell what it is, you must see what it's NOT.

It's definitely NOT self-centered mental absorption!

If THAT were "liberating" ... then millions would be totally free. In fact ... self-centered reflection is the exact opposite of genuine Self-Observation ... and it's worst enemy!

Self-Observation is watching everything that goes on ... both within yourself and outside.

Do nothing but watch ... just like it was happening to someone else.

Don't "personalize."

Don't "react."

Don't form an opinion about anything you observe.

Don't judge anything as good or bad, pleasurable or painful, favorable or unfavorable.

Simply watch!

Watch as if you have no personal connection with whatever you observe.

It's just like standing on the sidewalk watching cars going by. They are different sizes, shapes, and colors, but what does that have to do with you?

You have no connection with the color, shape, or size ... you are merely watching them go by.

Now ... Self-Observation means "passive detachment."

You don't try changing the things you see in yourself ... and you don't "interfere."

No attitude.

You simply LOOK.

It's a remarkable experience to "stand aside" and watch a fear, a depression, or a passion "pass through" you without personalizing it.

It is "sheer magic" that eventually changes things effortlessly and correctly as we proceed.

"Self-Observation"

Your greatest technique for New-ness!

Huna "Hierarchy" ... rising above the Order of Ku, Lono, and Kane

One common misconception in Huna is that there were Three "Orders" of Kahuna.

The Three Lesser Orders of Kahuna are Ku, Lono, and Kane.

Most people only know about these three.

... but there are the Higher Orders.

You have to graduate from all three Lesser Orders before you can join the Higher Orders ...

... like Maui.

My true favorite! :-)

But you can also find hints about The Highest Order in the Huna Ohana message archives.

Again, this goes back to "The Secret Vault."

So ...

... why does it have to be this way?

"A more balanced perspective!"

Huna – Truth or Fiction?

Aloha all!

Linda Barrett sent a humorous post to the Huna Ohana group exposing some of the manipulating language patters that "some people" with certain political agendas are using to keep you from learning how you can develop your "magical abilities" yourself.

A whole new "industry" has developed recently around trying to keep Max Freedom Long's true findings and what Huna really is.

It is true that most of the people who either promote or "oppose" Huna really haven't gone through the entire story.

From another one of Linda's posts to me ...

The leading question was "Did Long find the secret science behind the miracles of the kahuna?"

You can answer either way depending on your political agenda, but the important question is if that was what Max was looking for.

That's missing the point because that's not quite what he was looking for.

Maybe the important thing is you can do and you can teach people how to do all the magic the Kahuna used to be able to that Max Freedom Long was investigating.

  • Remote Viewing

  • Seeing into the future

  • Changing the future

  • Healing

  • Blessing

  • Removing complexes

  • And so on.

So here's the link to Linda's revealing post on her blog ...

    Huna Secrets of Remote Healing

One top authority (I don't recall if it was Charlie Kenn or Sam Lono or who at this time) told us ...
"Max HAD ALL THE ANSWERS ...
... he just didn't put them all
    in his books."

When Dad asked the magic question ... "If I did know where those answers are, where would I find them?" ... the answer came back in Max's voice ...

... "Go back and read the Bulletins. It's all there." *

    "The Secret Archives"

Most of you know ... or anyone who has done any SERIOUS RESEARCH on Huna knows ... there are over 3000 pages of research reports Max published and distributed to the HRA's in his lifetime.

All research, experiments, and discussions appeared in the Bulletins before they anything was published in book form.

And only a TINY percentage made it into the books.

BTW ... it was done that way deliberately. :)

    Hmmm ...
    "Why didn't he just
    'give away' all his secrets?"

    Well ...

You can still get ALL THE BULLETINS from HRI, if you want THE WHOLE STORY.

    Now.

    So HERE's a tidbit ...

Plenty of information was left out simply because of lack of space.

In the early days, many of the HRA's reported having trouble picturing the healed condition when working on Remote Healing.

In 1948, shortly after the publication of The Secret Science Behind Miracles, Max revealed his secret technique for getting around the tendency to let the "undesired condition" slip into mind when doing Remote Healing.

The secret is in visualizing the AKA BODY of the person you are healing.

    Here's the basic outline.

Remember that you are connected by an aka thread ... so any manipulation you do in your mind affects them telepathically.

Also remember the Law of Reciprocation ... meaning whatever you "do to them" also affects you ... so be sure to ask for the guidance of BOTH High Selves.

    Relax and go to level.

    1. Start by seeing them in their current condition.

    2. Then imagine their aka body raising out of the physical body.

You will notice that whatever ills the person may have will show up as contaminations on the aka body ... perhaps as dark spots, red flashes, hard objects, clogs, etc. on the otherwise transparent aka body.

    3. Clean the aka body.

Now, one of the Master Keys of Huna is the use of PHYSICAL STIMULUS to impress the unihipili ... so it is important to actually REACH OUT AND USE YOUR HANDS as you imagine yourself cleaning and removing any imperfections from the aka body.

It's also important to remember to use a SURCHARGE of mana in your healing work.

Keep cleaning until the light blue aka body becomes a deeper blue.

    4. Strengthen the aka body using your surcharge of mana until it takes on a new GLOW of "glassy solidity."

    5. Return it to the body to use ITS STRENGTH to correct the ailing parts of the physical body.

    6. End your session.

    That's the basic process.

REPEAT the process (either in the same session or in multiple sessions) until the aka body can be pulled out WITHOUT bringing new amounts of the former contaminations ... until it COMES OUT CLEAR.
    ... and keep on learining!

    --Vince

    * Max did know a lot of "unscrupulous" or "naive" people would say they were "channeling" him, so he DID set up a VERIFICATION CODE ... just like Houdini ... so WE CAN TELL by the "message" if it is valid or not.

Too bad nobody told that dimwit author with the Ouija board.

Hmmm ... "Why don't we give away all our secrets?"

    Is Huna a Religion?

    "What is Huna?"
    • Huna is about miracles, making things happen no matter what.
    • Huna is about self-reliance.
    • Huna is about empowerment, about increasing your spirituality, energy, and your metaphysical healing powers.
    • Huna is about living a hurtless and helpful life.
    • Huna is a powerful and transforming system of practices, teachings, philosophy, energy work, and more.

HUNA™ is an internationally registered trademark of Huna Research, Inc., the organization which coordinates the teaching, research, and practice of this ancient system recovered during over fifty years of research by Max Freedom Long (1890-1971) from the ancient traditions of Hawaii.

Huna contains elements of philosophy, science, and religion.

We often speak of Huna as not in itself a religion, but the truth which lies behind all religions alike. It is a science because it explains spiritual/metaphysical matters not as theological belief, but of direct knowledge obtainable by study and investigation.

It's religious aspect gives Huna "followers" or practitioners a rule of life ... not based on alleged "commands" given to the "chosen" at some remote period in the past, but on plain common sense as indicated by observable facts. The "Divine Will" is expressed in what we know as the laws of Nature.

YOUR RELIGION is what YOU believe ... not what you're told to believe.

An that means ... from a certain viewpoint ... Huna can be practiced as a religion.

There are TWO BIG DIFFERENCES between Huna and what is "typically" called religion...

FIRST ... Huna does not demand belief or even speak of "belief" in the usual sense, because the Huna student either KNOWS a thing or suspends judgmentt about it until they can experience the results until such time as they prove it for themselves.

SECOND ... Huna doesn't endeavor to convert anyone from whatever religion he holds ... it EXPLAINS your religion to you and enables you to see the DEEPER MEANING and PURPOSE than you ever knew before.

Huna principles are not tenets of faith, but are based on direct and repeatable OBSERVATION of what happens.

As my Hawaiian "grandfather" taught ...

Huna 101: your "Bowl of Light"

"The Bowl of Light" is one of the earliest and most important "parables" from Molokai.

Here is the basic story as taught by Kaili'ohe Kame'ekua.

    --Vince

    The Bowl of Light

Each child born has at birth, a Bowl of Perfect Light.

If he tends his Light it will grow in strength and he can do all things — swim with the shark, fly with the birds, know and understand all things.

If, however, he became envious or jealous he drops a stone into his Bowl of Light and some of the Light goes out.

Light and the stone cannot hold the same space.

If he continues to put stones in the Bowl of Light, the Light will go out and he will become a stone.

A stone does not grow, nor does it move.

If at any time he tires of being a stone, all he needs to do is turn the bowl upside down and the stones will fall away and the Light will grow once more.

    Huna Psychology: An Introduction

Huna is not an "occult" system-- that is, hidden from all but a few "favored" adherents or "initiates." It is based on knowledge of human psychology and of how the various parts of the human personality function. When you learn how the psyche works, you will be able to see how it functions properly and with the greatest effectiveness. Huna emphasizes normal living in every way and makes everyday life more livable. In times of stress, Huna offers effective relief in any situation. As Max Freedom Long put it, "If you are not using Huna, you are working too hard!"

    Basic Concepts

The basic tenets of Huna can be summarized in these words, "NO HURT: NO SIN," that is, the Huna concept of "sin" is doing something hurtful. "SERVE TO DESERVE," that is, be of help and service to others in order to feel worthy of good things in your life. A more concise statement is the Huna motto: The Hurtless and Helpful Life.

    Huna Will Work for Everyone

Potentially, Huna principles will work for everyone. When the desired results are not obtained, Huna psychology reveals the causes of the failure. The best place to start learning the basics of Huna psychology is the Free Huna Online Newsletter available at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/huna/. It is an excellent basic text that will give you a clear statement of what Huna is and how to use it. A good, quick, and thorough introduction is Huna: The Ancient Religion of Positive Thinking, by William Glover.

For further study, the works of Max Freedom Long are recommended. The Secret Science at Work (1953) reviews the account of the discovery of the ancient coded secrets of the kahuna and gives suggestions for the use of Huna principles. The Secret Science Behind Miracles (1948) presents a more detailed account of the search and the method of discovery. These books and more available online at The Huna Store.

    Is "Psychic" Ability Necessary?

It is not necessary to have "psychic" ability in order to use Huna. Such ability is natural to everyone and is developed to a greater extent by some, while in others such qualities are latent, or unrecognized, although used naturally. Because the principles of Huna psychology involve the study of universal laws and basic concepts, most people find that the intuition becomes stronger and "psychic" or "spiritual" awareness begins to develop. This awareness is the by-product of profound study in any area, whether astrology or physics, art or Tarot, biochemistry or any of the systems of psychology, including Huna.

You are More than a Body

Because you are conscious of your own existence, you realize that you are alive and that a process of thinking is taking place. You are aware of your body and its various functions, both voluntary and involuntary. The part of you that is all of these things-- the real you, so to speak-- enables you to be conscious of the fact that you exist as a spiritual or psychic "person" in addition to the body in which you seem to live. It is natural, therefore, to speak of YOU and YOUR BODY as two parts, whether they are actually separate or not.

    Conscious and Subconscious Minds

At times a person speaks of "having a little talk with himself" in order to make up his mind about a decision or to work up courage for something very difficult or frightening. "I told myself there was nothing to worry about," we might say. Or, in trying to make a decision, we have a little conversation "with ourselves" and mentally list the pros and cons of the alternatives. It is as if one part of us argues for one side, while a second part comes up with arguments for the other!

Whether we consider that there are really two of us inside our minds, or two functions of one mind, at least it seems for the moment that two separate minds exist. At the time the function of the mind is dual and not single. Since most psychological systems recognize a subconscious part of the mind, it is natural to state that there are two minds or psychic entities. For the purpose of discussing the psyche, we may speak of two minds or two selves: the conscious-mind self and the subconscious-mind self.

It is the conscious mind which the kahuna called "uhane," or the middle self, the part of man that is conscious of his own existence and has the ability to reason. The subconscious mind was "unihipili," or the inner self. Max used the term "low self". This is the one we "have a talk with." The term "low" has no reference to rank or importance, but only to the fact that it is "below" the level of consciousness (thus the term sub-conscious) and has its bodily center in the solar plexus, below the consciousness centered in the head. Remember that the function of this part of you is very important and the low or basic self has a very large part to play in your life.

There is Yet a Third Part of Man

The third part is the High Self-- called by the kahuna the name "Aumakua." This is sometimes called the "superconscious," but writers unfamiliar with Huna psychology may use that word to designate the subconscious. The High Self is the "older, utterly trustworthy, parental spirit." The High Self may, in religious terms, be called a sort of guardian angel who helps us when requested to do so, but does not necessarily interfere unless asked to help. However the concept of "God" or deity was considered to be above the level of High Self, which is an integral part of the human personality. It is our divine connection with God. It is the High Self, using whatever higher resources which may be required, that brings all desired conditions into reality.

    The Triangle of Trinity

The symbol of the triangle suggests that once all three selves are working together with perfect union and harmony, we have perfect communication among the three selves. Even though we often speak of separate functions of the individual three selves, remember that they must always work together to function effectively. When we refer to an individual self, we must always include the others in proper relation to that part. It is at this stage of harmony that there is "direct" contact from the middle self to the High Self, because all three are a harmonious three-self team. This is the perfect or whole person.

All three selves have their proper part to play in the life of each of us, and they must work together to accomplish whatever is desired, whether solving a problem in the present, or trying to work for a better future. When the three selves work harmoniously together, things can happen that may appear to be "miracles." But when you know the proper and normal functions of the three selves and how they work together, the miracles will seem to be in no way "supernatural."

The ideal to which we aspire is to become a complete person, with all parts united. As Max Freedom Long expressed it: "Our task as middle selves is primarily that of learning to work consciously and properly with both the low [inner] self and the High Self."

    "Aka" or Shadowy Bodies

There is an original blueprint or pattern, printed on transparent material, which fits each of the three selves in every detail. Compare this with the transparent overlays used in encyclopedias to show the various skeletal, muscular, or nervous systems of the physical body. The kahuna of ancient Hawaii talked of the three selves of man, with their exact duplicates, which they referred to as aka-bodies. This aka-substance formed a sort of invisible pattern or "aura" around each of the three selves, keeping the blueprint intact, but capable of changing shapes temporarily to form a connecting thread between the basic self, the middle self, and the High Self.

Since aka has a sticky quality and stretches without breaking, when contact is made between two persons, a long, sticky thread is drawn out between the two, like a silver spider-web, and the connection between them remains. Further contacts add other aka-threads and these are braided together into an aka-cord, resulting in strong rapport between the two persons. Such an aka-cord must be kept strongly braided between the inner self and the middle self, and between the inner self and the High Self, in order for the three to work harmoniously together.

    Mana, or Vital Force

The kahuna recognized the magnetic and the opposite, repelling nature of vital force, or "mana," but unfortunately left no detailed exposition on the subject. They knew the force as a thing which had to do with all thought processes and bodily activities. The life force was the essence of life itself. The kahuna symbol for this life-force was water. Water flows and so does vital force. Water fills things. So does the vital force. Water may leak away and so may vital force. All thinking involves an electrical-like activity of Mana. The word "mana-o" means "thinking," the "o" added to show that the process is one of using Mana to produce thought. As each thought is formed it is given its aka body and is fastened by a thread of the same substance to thoughts which came before it ("association of ideas" in terms of modern psychology).

Mana is taken from the food and air by the inner self and is stored in its aka-body, but it is shared with the middle self and with the High Self. The Mana, when used as the life-force of the middle self is changed in some subtle way. The kahuna of old symbolized this as a dividing of the basic Mana into two kinds, and called it Mana-Mana, indicating that it was "doubled" in power, so that it could be used by the middle self to direct the inner self. This is the force we know vaguely in modern psychology as "the will." It is seldom used in its full strength, and so the inner self gets out of hand or flits from one activity to another, without carrying out any suggestion or command fully.

    Accumulating a Surcharge of Mana

We know that taking a slow, deep breath will give us an extra amount of energy. We can use certain techniques combined with specific mental images to accumulate a surcharge-- an extra large and powerful charge-- of vital force any time we need it. This assumes that we are in reasonably good health and are not weakened by physical or emotional trauma. We can use these surcharges of Mana in several very valuable ways, particularly in healing ourselves and others, and in making a Prayer-Action that will have real power.

    An Action of the Mind

The kahuna believed that by an action of the mind a person adds to the amount of Mana created from food and air. The extraction process is quickened. This theory is supported by our physiologists, who have found that when we digest food it is not all used at once, but is changed to blood sugar, or glycogen, and oxidized with oxygen from the air we breath to give us such amounts of force and energy as we may need for the work we happen to do. The basic self, who tends to all such matters, can at any time begin to take in more air and cause more blood sugar to be burned to create more of that strange chemically-manufactured force we call Mana. The inner self learns to do this easily in most cases. By combining the Mana from food and air with additional Mana from unlimited cosmic sources, we can always have the power we need to accomplish whatever we truly and justly desire.

The accumulation of a surcharge of vital force is accomplished simply by explaining to the inner self within just what it is to do and then asking it to do it. To help the inner self, we can start breathing more deeply, add the thought of accumulating a large surcharge of Mana, and the process begins.

The Mana Rises Like a Fountain

The kahuna used the symbol of water for Mana. When he wished to accumulate a surcharge, be breathed deeply and visualized Mana rising like water rising in a fountain, higher and higher until it overflowed. The body is pictured as the fountain and the water is the Mana. Another image that can be used is filling a sphere with light and mentally seeing your entire body surrounded by this sphere and fully illuminated.

    An Exercise

Exercise or any form of physical exertion always starts the inner self manufacturing more Mana, otherwise we would use up what we have in a few minutes and would begin to feel faint. Athletes know that they can go only so far on their first wind, which is the charge of Mana they happen to have in their body and aka-body at the start. Then in a short time they get a fresh supply of energy (the second wind) and can then keep going steadily and at top speed. It is important to use the surcharge, over and above the basic physical energy required to maintain health and daily activity, in working toward a specific goal, such as healing or solving a social problem.

    Or a Mental Attitude

Instead of exercising, we can assume the mental attitude of getting set to run a race. We hold the picture in mind of getting ready to run, we breathe more rapidly and tense up the muscles a little. The inner self will begin to create the desired vital force.

    A Sense of Well-Being

Persons with a low normal charge-level of vital force have found that they can sense the additional surge of Mana after taking on an extra supply. It adds to the sense of well-being, of physical strength and endurance, of will and determination, and it sharpens the mind, makes memorization faster and easier, and the senses more acute. This can easily be tested by checking the clearer vision or sharper memory after a surcharge of vital force.

    Mana and Miracles

The point that is most important when considering Mana or vital force is that when you have learned to accumulate a surcharge, it is possible to use it, with the help of the High Self, to perform "miracles," which range all the way from slow and simple healing to miraculous changes in bodily tissue and even the fabric of the future. The High Self contacts us of its own accord in our sleep, making use of the connecting aka-cord. Our thoughts of the day, with our plans, hopes, fears, loves, and hates, are examined, taken as duplicate thought-forms, and at the same time vital force is taken. This vital force is stepped up to the high "voltage" and is used by the High Self to construct a shadowy body which will materialize your future. Such though-forms were described by the kahuna as "seeds" and were symbolized as seeds, which were vitalized by the High Self and grew into actualities of the future.

Let the Rain of Blessings Fall

The High Self not only takes from us the vital force it needs, but returns a compensating force to us. This is vital to our health and well-being. This return can be pictured as a shower of Mana falling from the up-welled fountain, as a gentle mist, a "rain of blessings." Thus the three-fold communication symbolized by the triangle is complete. After consciously contacting the High Self for the purpose of sending a gift of Mana and also presenting a "prayer-picture," the kahuna ended his prayer with these words: " The prayer takes its flight. Let the rain of blessings fall."

Daily contact and guidance in all of our lives may be had from the High Self as our Divine Connection-- but only if requested. All the more reason to discover for yourself the basic concepts of Huna and how they may be put to practical use in your own life-- the three selves and their functions as a unified team and the importance of understanding how Mana, the life force, can be increased and utilized to bring about a better life now and for the future.
