Huna Code Words: Some Simple Basics
He immediately found unmistakable words which describe the "parts of mind," as they are called in modern psychology.
After years of searching, he had started to learn the secret lore. Years passed before he found a "code" hidden in their language which told what they believed. This "code" aided him in discovering similar beliefs in other civilizations.
This code was built on a language which must have been identical phonetically to the language of the Huna tribes while they were in Egypt. In some of the lands visited by the migrating Huna tribes words of their language were left behind. Often these words became modified.
Fortunately, the Kahuna in Hawaii preserved their language with great care, because within their language lay a "code" which described their secret system.
If the language had been changed, key words would have been modified and the code would have never been preserved.
In order to keep their language pure, young Kahuna were trained to memorize long chants covering the history of the people and the genealogy of the chiefs on the surface. The deeper, hidden meaning behind these chants revealed the secret system translated by the Esoteric Code of the Kahuna. So if, while chanting these genealogies and legendary histories, a young priest changed a word, syllable, or a pronunciation, he was immediately corrected by the older Kahunas. As a result, the language in Hawaii remained unchanged over thousands of years.
Language modifications occurred in New Zealand and, to a greater degree, in Tahiti. But the Hawaiian language remained the purest and was the language Long used to find the key words to break the code and recover the ancient techniques of the Hawaiian Kahuna. His findings have been confirmed and supplemented by the work of Leinani Mellville.
The Hawaiian, like other Polynesian dialects, is a simple language. It is not agglutinated and does not change words to make tense or gender or number, instead it uses special words to show these changes. Hawaiian words are built from short root words, which together describe the full meaning of the idea. Since many root words have multiple meanings, it was ideal for a code language.
Max found that by translating each root, he could find the hidden meaning, or code meaning, of the key words in the Kahuna chants.
What complicated the breaking of the code is that certain words were used as the symbol of some part or element of the Huna system. If the symbolic meaning was not known, the true meaning of the statement could not be understood until recently.
For instance, in early Egypt the little pictured glyph of a grasshopper is to be found in the tombs with the mummy.
In Hawaii , the grasshopper was also a symbol for the same concept.
The Hawaiian word for grasshopper is unihipili. The definition given in the Andrews "Hawaiian-English Dictionary" of 1865 is "one name of a class of gods, while Aumakua is another. They were departed spirits of decomposed persons." Only by translating and considering the meaning of the roots of the words can one get at the real Huna meaning. It was the word used by the kahuna to indicate what we call the subconscious. None of the roots have anything to do with a grasshopper or with spirits or with a mummy of the deceased, but they all describe some characteristic of the subconscious mind.
The root pili means "united or joining" or "belonging to a person," and "to adhere to something." The subconscious is "joined to" and "belongs to" the body of the man. The root nihi describes "secretiveness, working silently and softly." The subconscious mind is certainly silent. The root u means a self, an "I."
The priests had an alternate word, uhinipili, for the subconscious, which repeats some of the root words, but contains others which provide additional meanings.
Uhi carries the meaning of "a weak voice, which is smothered by another voice." Another meaning is "to hide or be secretive." All these descriptions aptly describe the subconscious mind and the way it works. They show that it is secretive, that it is closely attached to the conscious mind, that it will do things only when it wishes to do so, and that it also hides things, such as complexes, and is the center of the emotions.
Uhane is Hawaiian for the conscious mind. U means a "self” and hane means "to talk." The root words gave the description of the conscious mind, the self which talks. The human being is the only animal which is able to talk to convey ideas.
These examples show the method used in finding the hidden meanings in words used by the Kahuna. The code was really quite simple. The separate meanings of the root words describe the idea that is hidden in the word.
The Hawaiian code word for the Super-conscious is Aumakua.
Makua means "parental" or "a pair of gods," and it is the "parental" part of man. The roots also mean "very old." The translation for the word aumakua given by a student of Hawaiian lore is "utterly trustworthy parental spirit." The Hawaiian dictionary translates the word as "one who can be trusted as a child trusts a parent."
One could call the super-conscious: "God who is trusted to love the subconscious and conscious with whom it is connected." It will help us and guide us throughout our life.

The Huna Code
One of the oldest and best kept secrets in the world has been undergoing thorough, investigative and analytical research during this last century. It is a secret which combines psychology with religion, perhaps the finest and best system of this kind that the world has ever known; and yet, modern man nearly lost this fundamental knowledge.
The pop culture movie “The Secret” presented a simplistic view of just one of the basic tenets of this ancient wisdom. Some of the basic precepts of Huna have been "rediscovered" and presented to us under the label of "positive thinking” or “the law of attraction.” However, most people who try the techniques for awhile and then give up, because the psychology does not work for them.
Why do these techniques often fail to produce the desired results?
An ancient secret supplies the answer.
The people who knew this secret system practiced a very sophisticated, but easy-to-use form, of positive thinking that applies the complete law of attraction with spectacular results. Unfortunately, some of the Kahuna’s most important concepts have NOT yet come into general knowledge. As a result, many people who have read books and have tried to "think positively" have found that practice does not work for them.
At least seven thousand years ago, a group of people knew the principles of positive thinking and the law of attraction … however, they understood the concepts far more clearly than our “modern” schools-of-thought. Their techniques were more sophisticated. With their additional knowledge, the ancient peoples who practiced this secret system performed what we now can only call miracles.
This secret contains much more than a successful method of creative thinking. It offers a philosophy of life that could be classified as a religion. The religious aspect seems to be the simplest, most complete, and finest fundamental system so far developed. It stands on its own merits, and clarifies the basic tenets of many of the world's faiths.
Originally this system was without a name. It was handed down from parent to child through centuries and centuries. As this system was originally "rediscovered" in Hawaii, Huna, the Polynesian word for "secret" was selected. The "u" is pronounced like the double "oo" in moon. The Polynesian word for "priest" is Kahuna, meaning "keeper of the secret."
The knowledge of Huna eventually spread by migration through several parts of the world. The initiatory material of this system was kept within a hereditary clan of priests. It was not written down. Instead, a special language was developed, which provided a means of giving both an inner and an outer meaning to any statement of the teachings.
These dual meanings were similar to the initiatory statements of the lodges and brotherhoods that we have today.
Only an initiate of the particular lodge can understand a particular secret phrase or statement. Similarly, only the Kahuna initiates could understand the inner meaning of a Huna phrase or statement.
Max Freedom Long spent the greater part of his life researching this special language. He wrote several books recording his findings, which describe in detail the "code" as he knew it.
He came upon evidence that there had been such a system of knowledge almost by accident, and then devoted more than fifty years unearthing and correlating the bits and pieces,.
We have only recently come into full possession of the priceless knowledge.
According to Charles Kenn, Max Freedom Long became acquainted with Doctor William Tufts Brigham and they became life-long friends. When they met, Dr. Brigham was the curator of the Bishop Museum of Natural History in Honolulu. When they met, Max had already spent forty years studying the Hawaiians, their society, religion and other aspects of their culture. Hearing that the Hawaiian Kahuna priests had fire-walked on red hot lava as it flowed from a volcano, he asked Dr. Brigham it there was any truth in the reports.
"Yes," he said, "these Kahuna priests lava-walked in my early days here in Hawaii."
He went on to explain how he himself had walked across red hot lava. He had burned off his heavy mountain boots and socks, yet his feet remained unburned. No one had treated his feet. All that the natives did was to pray for protection from the heat, and this protection was given.
Continuing this questioning, Long also confirmed the Kahuna priests had done remarkable healings.
"What have these people got?" he demanded.
Dr. Brigham replied, "A system of psychology and religion, which is pure enough and close enough to its source, whatever that is, to work for them. I have tried for forty years to learn how they perform their magic, but to no avail. The secret lore is very sacred to the native priests."
After this meeting with Dr. Brigham, Mr. Long spent the next sixteen years in Hawaii trying to find the meaning behind the chants and prayers of the Hawaiian priests. He continued the research later in California and, by 1936, had gained a fair knowledge of the basic principles of the secret lore.
Archaeologists have established that the present inhabitants of the Polynesian archipelago originally migrated from the Asian mainland. A study of Huna and its origins agrees with these findings.
In 1948, Werner Wolf revealed the similarity between the Egyptian glyph writings and the "Paddle Board" writings of the natives of Easter Island in the Pacific. He suggested some ancient tie between the Egyptians and the Easter Island branch of the Polynesians. Max Freedom Long's research definitely suggests the Polynesian Kahuna beiefs may have their origins in ancient Egypt.
His first book, "Recovering the Ancient Magic," was published in England. Among those who read it was Reginald Stewart, a war correspondent, who as a young man had learned of this same ancient lore from a tribe of Berbers in the Atlas mountains of North Africa.
An old woman, called a "Quahine." had demonstrated the workability of the ancient system. In fact, she took young Stewart as a blood son and started to teach him, together with her seventeen-year-old daughter, the ancient beliefs and practices. Unfortunately, she had only made a beginning of her instructions when she was accidentally killed by a stray bullet from a battle going on in a valley between two warring tribes. As there was no other teacher to be found, Stewart returned to England, carrying his notes with him. Years later when, reading Max's book, he realized that Long was writing about the same system he had learned, in part, from her.
Many of the special words that his teacher had used to describe her beliefs were almost identical to the Hawaiian. He sent Long a letter and soon was sharing what he knew. Together they managed to piece together the basics of the secret lore.
Among the other things the Quahine or "Woman Kahuna" had told Stewart was the legend of how her tribe had once been a part of twelve sub-tribes who had known and used Huna concepts, and who had lived in the Sahara Desert when it was still a green and fertile land of flowing rivers. As the rivers dried, the tribes foresaw that their lore was in danger of extinction. Concerned, they used their psychic powers to look about the world for a place to which they could move, an area where they would find safety for their beliefs. The place that they chose was the isolated Pacific.
The tribes left Egypt and went in large double canoes down the Red Sea into the Indian Ocean, and eventually made their way to the far Pacific Isles. There were, she said, twelve tribes; however, her tribe remained behind as a rear guard lest the others be detained by the rulers of the period. They eventually reached the Atlas mountain area where they were able to preserve the secret lore. The eleven tribes which got away divided. At least one tribe traveled along the coast of Africa to Madagascar. Some evidently settled there, since half of the island today, over two thousand years later, is inhabited by a light brown people, who speak a language which is one of the Polynesian dialects, called Malagasy.
Other Huna people migrated through Arabia and into India. In India they left traces of their ideas, but little of their language. Whereas in Madagascar the language provides the evidence, in India it comes from the ideas which were left behind. The Kahunas must have made friends with the religious men of that period. Apparently, the teachers of Yoga were initiated into the Huna beliefs. Unfortunately, the beliefs gradually became contaminated. As an example, breathing exercises, vital to the practitioners of Huna, are also important in Yoga. However, the yogis began to experiment and over the years most of the Huna concepts became mixed and muddled, until finally very little of the practical application of the original system exists in Yoga today.
On the other hand, the original Huna beliefs were still pure when Buddha established his doctrine as a reform of the Brahmanism of his day. Obviously, there was a knowledge of Huna on the part of Buddha and his followers, because there are esoteric elements of Buddhism which can be understood only by knowing the Huna system. For example, the concept of attaining Nirvana, ordinarily understood as blending back into the source of all life and thus ceasing to exist, takes on an entirely different meaning when one understands Huna.
From India the ten remaining initiate tribes migrated through the Sumatra and Java straits. The Madagascar tribe did not join them. In the islands of the Pacific are ten different dialects of the Polynesian tongue represented in New Zealand, in Hawaii, in Tahiti, in Samoa and in the smaller islands of the Pacific area.
Because of the remote location of these islands, the people were able to preserve their beliefs and practice them for over two thousand years, free from the influence of other beliefs.
The Huna people evidently settled in the Polynesian Islands before the writing of the Four Gospels because when the missionaries arrived in Hawaii, they were surprised to find that the natives knew all the main stories of the Old Testament, but knew nothing that was contained in the New Testament. Their legends told the story of the creation of Adam and Eve and the Garden. They had a close account of Noah and the Flood. They even knew of Jonah and the Whale. These were stories that had come from Chaldea and Babylonia, when the Jews were in captivity there. However, in none of the Hawaiian legends can be found even a trace of the story of Jesus or Mary or the Crucifixion.
The missionaries, who arrived in Hawaii in 1820, could not understand how the natives had learned the Old Testament stories. If early explorers had taught stories of Adam and Eve, they certainly would have told of Jesus and his disciples.
Following the migration to Polynesia, the system flourished.
The Kahunas who knew the secret system were healers. They could heal broken bones, often in an instant. They were also able to look into the future.
Then the missionaries arrived. The Hawaiians were impressed by their claim that Jesus performed healing miracles and, quite naturally, assumed that the Christians knew all about the Huna system. The missionary doctors, however, could not heal their sick as readily as the Kahuna healers. So the natives eventually realized that these Christians, while they had the outer semblance of some Huna, did not know the complete working system.
As the missionaries obtained political influence over the chiefs, and the Kahuna were outlawed.
The younger generation, the daughters and the sons who normally would have taken initiation and would have learned the secret, dill not undertake the necessary training. Gradually, as the older Kahuna began to die, the secret lore began to die as well.
Huna, after having been kept pure and intact throughout all the centuries, almost became lost.
The “Kahuna Motto” was the rule.
* "Conceal in Secrecy."
* "Preserve in Silence."
* "Disguise our Inner Teachings with a False Outer Mask."
* "Those who are "born into our house" are entitled to know the secrets of our
house."
* "Those who do NOT belong are not entitled to know what we know."
However, our brother King Kalakaua summoned all of the most accomplished of the Kahuna Class from throughout the islands to the palace. He gathered everyone of importance, including High Temple Priests skilled in the arts of divination, philosophers, historians, doctors of spiritual medicine, etc.
The secret knowledge passed down orally in the priesthood through the generations was finally recorded in writing and locked away in the King's palace.
Then, on January 17, 1893 ... the day Kalakaua's sister, Queen Liliokalani was dethroned ... drug dealers and smugglers broke in to the palace and burned the former King's filing room.
Only Nana Mary Julia Glennie Bush survived to preserve the "secret treasure" of the Hamatua strong-hold. These teachings were passed-down to Leinani Melville, who alone preserved the Lost Secrets of the Kahuna.
Before he died, Leinani gave the only existing copy of the "Lost and Hidden Secrets of the Esoteric Code of the Kahuna" to Morrnah Simeona to keep it secure until she could pass it on to “The True Legacy of the Kahuna."
With the blessing of the living Kahuna Elders at the time, Morrnah gave that manuscript to Dr. E. Otha Wingo, to whom Max Freedom Long entrusted his entire life’s work, to preserve the Authentic Kahuna traditions until the time was right.
Dr. Wingo, who I call “Dad” gave that manuscript to me, and it is my charge to reveal the Authentic Kahuna Traditions to you.
So ...
... as it said above the door to The House of Teave …
"Ahuwale Ka Nane Huna!" ...
"Let that which is unknown become known."
Because many new and exciting things will become known to you, and when the student is ready, the teacher will appear before you.

Huna 101: The Basics
The Huna teachings are the Ancient "Secret Science Behind Miracles" that has finally come to the West through the work of Max Freedom Long and others.
Long initially learned about the teachings of Huna from William Tufts Brigham who had spent forty years living in Hawaii, trying to understand the secrets of the lost and secret teachings of the Hawaiian Kahuna.
Long spend the next forty years studying and working with the Huna teachings, until his death in 1971. The work has now passed-down to Rev. James Vinson Wingo, DD, who is the International head of Max Freedom Long's Huna Research Associates and High Priest of the Huna Fellowship.
It teaches the practical application of Huna and many other Kahuna techniques.
The essence of Huna teachings is that the human being is made up of three levels of consciousness, known as selves, or minds. The Kahuna called the conscious mind the "uhane," or middle self. The "middle self" is that part of you that is conscious of its own existence and has the ability to reason. It also has the free will to create as it pleases, along with the inner self, or "low self. "
The subconscious mind is called the "unihipili" or low self. It is the part of you that is unconscious. It is the storehouse of all memory and the seat of the emotions. Its is the "inner child" of pop psychology and the New Age movement. with only simplistic, deductive reasoning.
The term "low" has no reference to rank or importance, only to the fact that it is below the level of consciousness of the middle self and to the fact that its bodily center is in the solar plexus rather than in the head.
The third part is the High Self, called the "Aumakua" by the Kahuna.
The high self is the "utterly trust-worthy parental spirit."
This higher part of you lives at a higher plane of consciousness, outside the physical body. It will not intervene in the affairs of life unless asked to do so.
This is understood to be a cosmic law your High Self must adhere to.
The high self can see into the "crystallized future" and creates your future "automatically" from your day-to-day thoughts.
As you thoughts change throughout your daily life, so your future likewise change.
Huna also teaches that communication with your High Self occurs quite naturally during sleep. It is in that contact that most of the thoughts-of-the-day are used by the High Self to materialize conditions in your future.
Huna teachings say that each of the three selves is equally important, and has its proper role to perform in the life of the individual. Your health, and happiness depend on the integration, blending, and harmonizing of your three selves.
Huna teaches that your High Self expresses ALL the Divine qualities … compassion ... patience ... love ... and forgiveness.
This is the IDEAL to which you, the middle self, are to aspire.

Huna: Testing the Mana Flow on yourself!
>
> Hi Vince,
>
> I attended one of your sessions where you demonstrated the power of
> using kinesiological testing to determine a postiive or negative
> response.
Aloha Darlene,
... "Careful."
There IS an important difference between "muscle testing" and Energy Testing.
... Mana Testing!
> This demonstration required 2 people. Is there a way to
> perform a kinesiology test on myself; without the assistance of a
> second person?
You can use "the body pendulum."
... it's on the DVDs.
Begin practicing with foods.
Hold the food being tested just in front of your 2nd chakra ... holding it evenly with both hands.
Relax ...
... get centered ...
... take a deep breath ...
... and "let go!"
Sooner or later you'll feel your body being "pulled" toward the food that is in harmony with your energies ... or "pushed" away from a food that is NOT in harmony with your energies.
Notice the differences.
The "fine-tuning" exercises from Donna Eden's "Energy Medicine" can be adapted for this method.
You can also just use a pendulum.
BUT ...
... make sure you've thoroughly read the section on "A Biological Basis for Energy Testing."
If you don't have Donna's book yet, get it at http://astore.amazon.com/freeonlinehun-20

Huna 101: So what's really different about Huna?
Healing includes not only the healing of the physical body, but healing of social and financial tangles, personal problems, and developing your full potential as a whole person.
- The plans for the desired future must be carefully worked out as thought-form pictures to fit exactly what we want to accomplish.
- Mana must be provided by the low self for use by the High Self.
- The High Self builds our thought-form pictures into the reality of the future.
... maybe because the truth of the principles are recognized or because Huna concepts are simple and universal.
Learning Huna may put your own ideas into perspective for the first time.
An Outline of unique Huna principles:
- The long-term scope of the Prayer-Action.
- The careful preparation that is required.
- The use of visualization may be familiar, but using it to create consciously a set of thought-forms to act as molds for the materialization of your desired future events is new.
- The request to the High Self, asking that the thought-forms be used to create for us a new and more desirable future is unique.
- Accumulating Mana, or Vital Force, and sending it to the High Self to be used in the creation of the your desired future are unique.
- The invisible AKA thread that connects you to your High Self is new, though hinted at in the idea of the "silvery cord."
- Using a flow of Mana along the aka cord to carry the thought-forms telepathically to the High Self is unique and of greatest importance.
- The fact that the aka thread runs between the aka body of the low self and the High Self ... and that it is the ONE AND ONLY means of contact between the inner self and the High Self ... is not only new, but REVOLUTIONARY.
- All prayer is telepathic.
These 9 principles explain WHY the usual vocal prayer made by the conscious mind or middle self often gets no answer.
... because the inner self is not brought into the action and the telepathic sending of the prayer is missing, to say nothing of supplying the needed vital force to be used by the High Self or paying attention to the removing of blocks to this telepathic communication.
Keep on studying.

Huna: The Nature of Predicting the Future!
> If I got a flash about the future and then I make
> changes so it doesn't happen. Then I wasn't seeing
> the future. Was I?
Aloha!
I like using the "clock tower" metaphor.
Let me give a specific example ...
I was leaving home one evening when I saw a “flash” of a white Camaro broad-siding me at a certain intersection.
As I approached that intersection I began driving slowly and more cautiously. Sure enough, as I got closer a kid in a white Camaro came racing up to the stop sing from the side street and skidded out into the middle of the main street in front of me.
"So what actually happened?"
The clock tower.
Imagine the same scene with two cars speeding toward an intersection … neither driver can see that another car is approaching.
But there’s a person standing atop a clock tower on the corner who can see both cars …
... he literally has a “Higher Perspective!”
He is able to PREDICT THE FUTURE … so far as he can see that *IF* the two cars continue
at their current pace, they will collide.
If he’s able to call one of the cars and give warning of the POTENTIAL tragedy, he BOTH predicted the future AND changed it.
Such is the nature of precognition.
The same thing happened to me and … I suspect … to you.
“Someone” … and I’m not going to name names, right? : ) … but, in Huna that "someone" is your Aumakua High Self.
... so "someone" with a Higher Perspective was able to predict what would happen if things continued as they were and give warning to avoid an undesired event.
Does that make sense?
And the "mechanics" of how to see the future is covered in Max Freedom Long's "The Secret Science Behind Miracles."
Enjoy!

MY REPLY:
Thanks Chad ...
... isn't it GREAT!
This is how I learned to see auras for the first time ... it's probably the FASTEST "ESP" training there is.
A couple of years ago I was doing a Huna intensive and we literally had one student who as close to being someone "just pulled-off-the-street" as you can get ...
... at the time she was the new "customer service" lady for Huna Research, Inc. ... with absolutely NO experience ... and almost no interest in "this Huna stuff" or anything like it.
She was just there to "help out."
So ...
I was teaching the "Learning How to See Auras in Less than 5 minutes" part of my training ... a simple 4-step process, and ... "of course" ... Hakalau is the First Step.
I don't think she even wanted to do it ...
... she made all kinds of excuses as to why it wouldn't work for her, etc. etc. ...
... she actually SAW the AURA ... and she saw it RIGHT AWAY ...
It really is that powerful!
She was in such "denial" she said, "I don't see anything ... all I see is all these colors flying around her head!"
Learning is such FUN ... is it not?
Like Doc La Tourrette always says ...
"If you DO THE DRILLS ... you GET THE SKILLS."
... and anybody can do it!
Onward ...
REPORT FROM STEPHANIE
> When I was practicing Hakalau at lunch there was
> this angry guy who was being rude to the waitress
> and I kept seeing these flashes of red light flying
> off around his head.
MY REPLY:
It's usually easier to see auras when people are agitated ... for a couple of reasons.
1. More EMOTION = more MANA.
2. RED is just MORE NOTICEABLE ...
... like the red Ferrari ...
... like the red dress ...
etc.
So NOW ... moving on!
The more you practice Hakalau ... the more you do it ... you start finding yourself more and more adept ... and you can "slip" into this state pretty much instantly!
"Stage One" is your ability to "get there" easily ... and you can stay in that state.
When I'm teaching or doing healing work I hold it all day long.
Just make sure you're holding it for a few moments before moving to Stage Two ... because that's very important!
"Stage Two" is simply ... while you're holding the Hakalau state ... allow your eyes to drop down to their "normal" position.
Just let the eyes naturally "drop" … staying "defocused" ... and make sure you're holding that EXPANDED AWARENESS.
THEN ... once your good at doing that naturally ... you can go on to "STAGE THREE" ...
Enjoy!

Huna 101: Parallels
Aloha!
This chart was developed by Huna Ohana member Joseph Gurney.
Hi all,
My background is Qabalah of the Golden Dawn variety. After recently getting into Huna, I have formed a tentative theory that there are parallels between Huna and the Qabalah (and also yoga and alchemy). Specifically, the Huna selves approximate to the Qabalistic parts of the soul. This is not unreasonable when you consider that Huna was said to originate in Egypt or Africa, and that the tribes left their wisdom in various places en route as they migrated there from.
I am pretty certain that the Unihipili, Uhane and Aumakua are the direct equivalents of the Nephesh, Ruach and Neshamah respectively. However after that it gets hazy, and it may well be that at the upper end of the scale, so to speak, there are no exact matches.
Are these correspondences valid? And if so, does this mean that knowing more about the one (e.g. Huna itself), can teach us more about the others?
Please see the image below for a summary.
I am grateful to Vince for helpful pointers he has given me already.
Joseph.
Keep studying!

The Huna World-Wide Healing Network
[How to Participate] [Summary]
[Support the TMHG] [100% Success Report]
Welcome,
Are you interested in healing yourself or helping to heal others? If you are then you may be interested in joining the Huna Telepathic Mutual Healing Group. Telepathic healing means receiving healing for yourself or participating in healing others at a distance.
The Huna Ohana sponsors an ongoing Telepathic Mutual Healing Group. The Telepathic Mutual Healing Group was started in 1948 by Max Freedom Long and is still active today.
Information on how you can participate in the Huna Telepathic Mutual Healing Group can be found at the end of this article.
The Telepathic Mutual Healing Group began its work in 1948 under the direction of Max Freedom Long. It consists of a small group of Huna Research members who are dedicated to the healing of those who request help healing of the body, personal problems, and social or financial tangles. The TMHG meets on a regular basis to send healing to those who request it for themselves or for others. Some are physically present at the Huna Headquarters Building in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Others join us in their healing meditation, wherever they may be physically. We have members from all parts of the world joining us to direct their Mana for the use of those who have need of healing.
Anyone may request help through the Telepathic Mutual Healing Group (TMHG).
All healing in essence is self-healing and is accomplished through your own three selves. The TMHG helps in two basic ways:
- By reinforcing the visualized picture which you describe as the desired result, and
- By sending an extra supply of healing mana (vital force), which will give your own life energy a boost and enable it to fulfill your request in the way you desired. We ask that you cooperate in the healing effort by following the simple suggestions outlined here. If you are joining the TMHG as a contributor to the healing Mana that is gathered and sent, we welcome you.
Step One:
Decide that you really want the illness healed or the physical, mental, or emotional problem solved, or the personal problem worked out. You must not only desire healing on a conscious level, but also on a subconscious level. All three selves must be involved to bring about healing: the conscious middle self, the subconscious basic self, and the higher consciousness of the High Self. Examine your feelings and determine what emotional reaction you have when you see yourself completely well and back to your desired way of living.
Step Two:
Decide exactly what you want the outcome to be. This requires careful thought (meditation, contemplation). Some requests cannot be made in exact terms. In that case, decide on what you will be doing when the desired result has been realized. If you always put yourself in the picture of your future, seeing yourself in action, the decision will be clear. When you know what the desired result will be, you are ready for it to be accomplished.
Step Three:
Visualize the desired result and describe it as briefly, but completely as possible. This naturally follows Step Two, but it is important to make a mental picture of your request, so that you can see it in your mind during a quiet period of meditation. And it is important to work out an exact verbal description in order to convey the picture to the TMHG workers.
The word-picture will also act as a strong physical stimulus to your subconscious mind. Check the words you have chosen for any emotional reaction associated with them.
Step Four:
Chose a time of day when you can stop for a few moments, without distraction and remain in a receptive attitude. This is the time when the healing energy can be sent by the TMHG and received by you. It is important that you do this on a regular basis, every day. If you wish to do this more than once each day, so much the better. The TMHG sends energy to those on the healing list at various times during the day and night. If we know you are in an especially receptive attitude, the healing energy can be concentrated. Send us the times you have chosen, so that we can work with you.
Step Five:
You may take part in one of two ways. Simply maintain a receptive attitude for a few minutes at the chosen time, or at any other time during the day when you feel it is needed. Thus the healing work of the TMHG can be more effective as the energy flows freely and without resistance.
The second way you can participate is through active participation. This can help you even more.
- Take several deep breaths.
- Picture yourself receiving healing energy from the TMHG and charging your body.
- Visualize the picture you have worked out and repeat the verbal description.
- Instruct your basic self to carry the request to the High Self.
- Release the request and put it out of your mind.
Add a request for help for someone else. This is done very simply in your thoughts. There are two basic Huna tenets involved in living the Huna life and receiving healing:
- Do no harm to anyone.
- When you perform a service to someone else, your inner consciousness (basic self) is convinced that you deserve the healing that you are requesting. This is summarized in the Huna motto: The Hurtless and Helpful Life.
Step Seven:
A simple, but definite ending to your quiet period of meditation should be made. One of the best endings is a statement of thanksgiving for the healing you have received. The ending releases the request to the High Self and allows it to be acted on. There are actions to be taken by all three selves, so be sure to allow each of your selves to do the part appropriate to that level of consciousness.
The Prayer-Picture is like a seed that is planted; you do not dig it up every day to see if it is growing.
Step Eight:
It is of the utmost importance that you convince your basic self or subconscious (unihipili) that you are worthy of healing and that you will be healed.
A physical stimulus is most effective in impressing the inner consciousness of the importance of the request.
A pledge or vow to some worthy cause; helping someone; giving up something for a period of time, an offering to a worthy cause or doing whatever you can do to make the desired outcome certain.
- After deciding on your request in exact words and the mental picture, send your request to Huna Headquarters. If you have already written a general request, it may be necessary to revise it according to the suggestions given here and send it again.
- State also the time of day you have chosen to participate. We will make sure there are TMHG members participating at that time. Our regular TMHG time is on Tuesday evenings at 9:00 P.M. Central Time (we have a full hour of meditation and energizing starting at 8:00 P.M.) TMHG members also work independently and in groups every day.
- Keep in touch by reporting briefly at regular intervals. A short handwritten note will be sufficient. We can only keep you on the healing list if you report regularly.
We recommend using the Huna Prayer (see below) process written by Max Freedom Long as a Kala (cleansing) meditation once or more every day. Use it especially when joining the TMHG.

Huna 101: Kahuna Physics
Telepathy and Telepathic Prayer"

A. The physical body.
B. The shadowy body pictured as slightly out of the physical body (as in astral travel etc.) but connected with the physical body by a large cord of shadowy body material.
C. A cluster of grapes representing in Huna symbology the clusters of thought forms embodying all memories. These are stored by the low self in its shadowy body (not in the physical brain) and are carried away in the shadowy body when the physical body dies.
D. This single wavy line represents the low voltage of vital force used by the low self (and made by it in the body). The shadowy body is an ideal storage battery to hold such vital force, and the threads of shadowy material extending in all directions (uniting the individual with all things and persons once touched) are ideal conductors for the low voltage vital force.
E. The thicker shadowy body material cord connecting the shadowy body with the physical body when the low self (usually accompanied by the middle self in its shadowy body) leaves the physical body during sleep, trance and astral travel. The zig-zag line pictures the flow of vital force along the cord.
F. The dotted circle indicates the shadowy body of the middle self. It does not have the shape of the physical body and is thinner than the shadowy body of the low self.
G. A distant person with whom telepathic or mind reading experiments are being carried out, or to whom the healing thought forms and vital force are being transferred in absent healing.
H. The thread or cord of shadowy body substance which connects the man with a distant person (as explained in G). Along the connecting thread flows low voltage vital force and thought forms, both moving to and from the experimenters. The small circles represent the thoughts as thought forms, but these would naturally be clusters to form complete ideas or impressions gained by an extension of sensory faculties along the thread to see, hear, smell, taste etc. and bring back reports. The kahunas symbolized this extension of sensory organs along shadowy threads as "reaching out a finger" or "an ear" etc. The sensory organs are duplicated in the shadowy body, so that the low self, when out of the physical, as in astral travel or after death can still see, hear, taste, etc.
I. Low voltage vital force bringing into action the shadowy cord connecting the low self with the High Self. This low voltage of force goes along the thread carrying the thought forms of a prayer to the High Self. It also furnishes the High Self with the force to be used in making instant or miraculous answers to prayers for healing.
J. The three wavy lines symbolize the flow of high voltage vital force from the High Self to the low. This is the atom smashing voltage which can make instant changes in bodily tissues to cause instant healing, or can produce the "physical phenomena" of Psychical Research.
K. The symbol of the High Self. It is connected with the low self by a thread of shadowy body substance.
L. Along the shadowy connecting thread move thought forms and sensory impressions, the latter gained either by a projection of shadowy sensory organs, such as the eyes, or by impressions already recorded as thought forms. All visions of the future are from the High Self and reach the low self as sensory impressions or thought forms sent along the thread from the High Self to the low self. Or, the low self may extend a portion of a shadowy body eye to the region of the High Self and "see" the thought forms of the not-yet-materialized future which have already been constructed by the High Self.
M. The doubled wavy line represents the middle voltage of vital force used as "will" and in its thinking, by the middle self.

Huna 101: Communicating with your High-Self ... Part II
The process I've repeated throughout this little piece (see Part I) can be outlined thus ...
Step One: Decide what your current situation is.
Whether it's relationships, finances, health, or whatever ... get an idea of "how things are now."
Step Two: Decide what exactly what improvements you really want to make.
Don't worry about HOW to do it ...
... INSTEAD ... just focus on what you want to be doing ... what you want to happen ... how you want things to be.
Step Three: Relax into "the silence," alpha, the meditative state, deep relaxation, self-hypnosis, whatever you want to call it ...
Relax ... and, while you're relaxed ... review the current situation.
Then imagine how you want it to be.
Because you're more in touch with your "inner self" at this level, you may find yourself adding nice little details at this point ... and that's OK.
Step Four: Turn the project over to the High Self.
... That's it!
... you've "turned the project over" ... so your job now is to look for signs, omens, feelings, visions ... whatever, however your High Self communicates to you.
In the lottery case from Part I, there are at least Two Master Keys worth pointing out.
First ...
As mentioned ... his focus was not on "how" to achieve the goal ... he focused on his desired outcome.
Second ...
His request was for "improving conditions here on earth" and would benefit others!
It's not necessary to be completely "self-less" in your request because improving conditions on Earth ... helping "humanity" ... includes making things better for you!
You're part of humanity, right?
Including your own self-interest is often necessary to build the genuine desire to push a project through ...
... and that's OK.
When your outcome helps at least two other people ... and is "for the benefit of all concerned" ... your success rate is sky-rocketed!
You may have already noticed the "Four-Step Process for Fine-Tuning Your High-Self Communication" does not involve a formal Ha Rite.
Once reason is because this is about developing your relationship with your selves ... both the unihipili "inner self" and the Aumakua "High Self."
By living the spiritual life according to the "Huna Way" ... by developing rapport and maintaining that communication things tend to "just work themselves out."
All the elements are still there!
Your desire energizes the thought-form ... the image of your outcome. You're sending your "prayer-picture" to the High Self. You're working with your inner self.
It's all there ... in a very "natural way" ... a way that you can use regularly ... every day ... to develop your Huna work.
Sometimes the feedback you receive from the High Self ... because you always get SOME KIND OF FEEDBACK within 72 hours of presenting your "project" ... tells you the goal you presented is not for your highest good at this time.
You may get a feeling you need to be focusing your attention elsewhere ...
... AND THAT'S GOOD ... because "balanced communication" is a two-way communication, and that feedback means you're that much closer to living your purpose in life.
And "living your purpose in life" is the meaning of living the "Huna Life."

Huna 101: How to stop a psychic attack!
Sorcerers can attack you!

It's a "complex" problem!
So ...
Why would anyone go to the trouble of putting an "evil spell" on anyone?
Really?
I mean ... most people "take care of themselves" anyway!
... and a "curse" requires certain conditions to "work."
... it's that "something eating inside" ... usually caused by thoughts of guilt.
The "complex" makes the unihipili either willing to accept "punishment" ... or unable to repel "attacks" ... or both.
It also makes the unihipili accept the idea that punishment is "deserved" ... sometimes even with amends having been made ... and forces it to continue or manifest the "punishment" in the form of sickness or mental illness.
And more ...
... the complex does what the Kahuna called "blocking the path" ... making your unihipili "unwilling" to contact the Aumakua.
All so "unnecessary."
Because "the key" is finding and "draining off" the complex.
"It's that easy!"
Kala or "clearing!"
Here's a simple yet surprisingly effective method that works ... but you do have to pay ...
... attention!
As you say these words honestly.
This is just one simple method.
... there are other techniques at http://hooponopono.net you can use.
So ...
Notice what "pops-up" and pay attention to the meaning of the words you're saying ...
... because there are "layers & layers" to this simple little prayer.

Huna 101: The Ha Rite ... Kahuna Prayer-Action
1. Decide exactly what you want.
2. Obtain the cooperation of the three selves. This requires the complete relaxation of the body, the inner self and the conscious mind, followed by meditation on the High Self to "draw it near to you."
3. Generate a surplus charge of mana (life force).
"I am now going to generate mana by breathing deeply.
I am gathering extra mana as I draw in more and more
oxygen. I ask my inner self to assist me in generating
and storing this force. My will is being made strong
and enduring so that I am filled with the
determination to accomplish the things I desire."
Take a series of deep breaths.
"My vitality is building up; my inner self is creating
mana. Mana is flowing like water into a bowl. Energy
is being stored in the bowl. I can see the mana rising
higher and higher in the bowl ... until it overflows."
Continue breathing until you feel fully charged.
"I now command my inner self to hold this mana energy,
until I am ready to send it to the High Self."
4. Make contact with your High Self.
"Parental Spirit, who dwells in the realm of Light, I
call to you. May the perfection of Your level of being
be reflected to my level of being. I ask that You lead
and guide me in all that is being done. I
ask that You take an active part in my life."
"May Your power create for me the good things, first
in Your perfected realm and then cause them to appear
as realities on my physical level."
5. Make the mental picture (thought-form) of the desired condition.
"I now make in my mind the mental picture of that
which I desire. I feel a deep, emotional need for
this."
Repeat your request three times with as much emotion as possible:
"I see myself as already having obtained my request,
and give thanks for it."
6. Send the thought-form to your inner self to present telepathically to your High Self:
"I hold this picture before the mirror of my High Self
and reflect it down into the depths of my inner self."
7. Strengthen the thought-form with mana and send it to your High Self.
"I now send this thought-form picture along a stream
of mana to You. May this gift of mana empower You to
work on Your level."
8. End the prayer with a feeling of faith and confidence:
"I end my prayer and release it to Your keeping to
work with as You see fit. I know that it is only a
matter of time until my request appears as a reality
on the physical level . . . My prayer has taken
flight. Let the Light of my High Self shine back to
me. Let the rain of blessings fall. So Mote it Be."
OK.
This is a really nice, simple, step-by-step process that works.
Now ...
Even though this is more than 30 years old and we are constantly learning new ways of improving it ... you can easily use this technique to start turning your dreams into reality!
So "give it a go!"
... and Enjoy!

Kahuna Power Secrets
> This probably is an elementary lesson, but I have
> missed it. Is it possible to accumulate vital force
> frequently during the day and then use it in the
> prayer when we are ready?
Good question.
Yes. And that is one of the reasons you should do your Ha Breathing daily.
In the Kahuna way of thinking, the key is conditioning your body/unihipili to KEEP a sur-charge of mana ready at all times. So, basically, a "normal" charge for you will, with practice, be ten times or more what a "normal" charge is for most people.
Lanakila used to teach cloud bursting in his "Targeting Your Mana" training. Now, cloud bursting might seem pointless on the surface, but what he was REALLY training you to do was ACCUMULATE mana ... STORE it effectively ... and then DIRECT it any time you
choose.
> Is there more effectiveness in working this way?
Is it good to be ten times as powerful as the average guy? :-)
Imagine having a regular surplus "store" of mana you can use at any time.
So those special times of day when you feel really "connected" you can just imagine sending a flow of mana to your High Self and then feeling the "return flow" known as "the rain of blessings."
It's also about being always ready in the moment.
> Do I instruct the lower self that this is what I am
> doing when I do the breathing exercises or even it
> is not to send the mana up at the present time?
Yes. Yes. One of the Master Keys Max Freedom Long discovered was how adding the THOUGHT of accumulating mana while doing the breathing multiplies the effect geometrically!
I think this is covered in "Letters on Huna" Lesson 4 or in Max's Mana, or Vital Force.
I had the folks do a demonstration of WHY-WHAT-HOW at last year's Huna World Convention.
Test it.
#1 - Get a baseline for how much mana you have.
(Energy Test, pendulum, however)
#2 - Do some deep breathing ... Ha Breathing.
#3 - Re-test your mana level.
#4 - Now do your Ha breathing while adding the THOUGHT
that you are increasing your mana, instructing your
unihipili that this is what you want it to do. (This
is covered well in Glover's book)
#5 - Test how much more mana you have.
You'll probably also notice how much easier it is when you add thought ... mental instructions, visualization, etc.
Dr. Joe does a really cool demonstration demonstrating the difference between Ha Breathing and Ha Breathing for Accumulating Mana.
It never occurred to me Ha Breathing could be used for relaxation ... I'd always used it the other way.
We are always learning, are we not?
> If I am working on a specific prayer is it helpful
> to use the affirmation frequently without sending up
> the mana?
I like how you've already answered this below.
Affirmations can actually do more harm than good because of "tag-ends."
> I am a past Science of Mind student where we used
> affirmations all the time. (Not very effectively I
> might add) Do the affirmations do anything by
> themselves or should they always be accompanied with
> the mana to the higher self?
Affirmations don't work for most people because so many necessary steps to guaranteed success are left out.
But ... affirmations done at Alpha work 300 times better, if that's any help.
And the Aumakua High Self will create your future from the thoughts you focus on throughout the day when "the connection" is made every night as you sleep.
So doing affirmations is like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hopping some of it will stick.
The stuff you thought about all day, or watched on TV, or focused on, or thought about that #*&**&% who cut you off in traffic, etc. ... they all "get there" with as much mana as your "affirmations."
So, which is better ... "affirmations" ... or "your chosen future?"
When you decide on "your chosen future" and you make a thought-form out of it, and you make it real, and you mana-gize it, and then you send it to the HS with the intention of making it manifest ... how many thousand time more powerful is THAT?
Which one WORKS?
:-)
Keep studying ...

Huna 101: Programming your "inner self"
Relax with your hands resting on your thighs ... palms down. You are very aware of your hands. Feel their weight on your thighs and feel their warmth. Concentrate on this weight. Become as sensitive as possible to a weight difference. Does one hand feel lighter than the other? One hand will feel lighter than the other if you are keenly aware of the slightest difference in sensation.
As soon as one hand feels lighter, concentrate on the lightness of this hand, in fact on ANY feeling or sensation that comes into that hand. Can you feel the transfer of heat from that hand to your leg? Is the hand particularly sensitive to the texture of your clothing?
It is important that once a sensation of lightness or warmth or texture is felt, you concentrate on the sensation. Sometimes one feels a tingling sensation. Whatever sensation you feel in the lighter hand, concentrate on THAT sensation.
Now we are going to focus your concentration even more by centering it on one finger – the index finger.
This index finger is now extremely light and in it we feel the other sensations – texture, warmth, tingling, whatever the light hand felt.
Now there is just one more step and then something is going to happen.
Think of your heavy hand as on one side of an old fashioned scale ... when one side goes down, the other side rises. Your heavy hand is causing the lighter hand to rise. FEEL this inclination to rise in the light hand's index finger. You know that this finger will rise. In fact, you feel it pressing less and less on the leg.
This concentration will actually produce a nerve impulse movement of the finger ... it will slowly lift from the leg. It may take a few seconds for the finger to lift or it may take a number of minutes ... but it WILL lift.
This initial movement of the finger is a signal from your unconscious mind that it is READY to receive your instructions.
PROGRAMMING
Re1ax in a comfortable chair. Concentrate on the light hand, on the index finger, on its rising.
Most people get a very definite rise of the index finger on the first try. Some get just a slight or almost imperceptible rise. Everybody gets a better rise the second time. This means greater contact with your unconscious mind.
The greater the lifting response, the deeper is your relaxed state and the MORE EFFECTIVE your instructions will be.
Even a SLIGHT movement of the index finger is enough to begin.
Keep Learning your Huna!

Huna 101: Ha Breathing
Key to the Unlimited
Power of Huna
by Rev. James Vinson Wingo, DD
Life is but a series of breaths. Breath is Life. We can live a long time without eating, a couple days without drinking, but life without breath is measured in minutes. Something so essential deserves our attention. Breath is the most important of all the bodily functions, in fact all the other bodily functions depend on breath.
As much as we are dependent on breath for life, so are we largely dependent on correct, healthy breathing habits for continued vitality and freedom from disease.
One of the first things we learn in Huna is that by controlling our breathing we can increase energy and vitality. On the other hand, incorrect, careless breathing leads to decreased vitality and opens us up to disease.
Civilization has changed our manner of breathing. Very few people breath correctly in today's world. The results can be seen in poor posture, contracted chests, stooped shoulders, and the large amount of respiratory disease.
The foundation of health is a healthy bloodstream. Breathing is the way you fully oxygenate the body and thereby stimulate the electrical process of every cell in the body.
Breathing also stimulates the flow of the lymph fluid which contains white blood cells. The lymph system is the body's sewage system. Every cell is surrounded by lymph. We have four times as much lymph fluid than blood! The blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the capillaries which diffuse them into the lymph fluid around each cell. The cells take only what they need and excrete toxins. Dead cells and other toxins must be eliminated by the lymph system, and the lymph system is activated by deep breathing!.
Whereas the blood system has a pump called the heart, the lymph system moves only through deep breathing and muscular movement.
Not only does physical health depend on correct breathing, our mental power, happiness, self-control, clear-sightedness, morals, and spiritual growth are dependent upon breath. Entire schools of Oriental Philosophy have been founded upon the "Science of Breath."
In Huna we practice breathing exercises which allow us to gain control of our bodies and our selves, enabling us to send mana to any organ or area of thought (thought-form) to energize it and thereby strengthen ourselves and others. By controlled breathing we can not only cure disease, but also practically do away with fear, worry, and the baser emotions.
Although breathing is something we do naturally and automatically it is important to examine just how breath functions.
The Mechanics Of Breathing
Breathing is accomplished through the elastic movements of the lungs and the activities of the thoracic cavity in which they are contained. The thorax is the portion of the body between the neck and abdomen. The thoracic cavity is occupied mainly by the heart and lungs. It is bound by the spine, the ribs and their cartilage, the breastbone and by the diaphragm below. It is more than simply the chest.
There are twenty-four ribs, twelve on each side which emerge from the spine. The upper seven pairs are called "true ribs" because they are fastened directly to the breastbone. The lower five pairs are called "floating ribs" because they are not directly attached. The upper two of them are fastened by cartilage to the other ribs and the lower three have free ends.
In respiration the ribs are moved by muscular layers known as the intercostal muscles. The diaphragm separates the thorax from the abdominal cavity.
In breathing the muscles expand the lungs so that a vacuum is created so that air rushes in (obeying that well-known law of physics). The whole process depends on the respiratory muscles. Without the muscles the lungs cannot expand.
So, in essence, the science of breathing relies on the proper control and development of these muscles resulting in the ability to attain the maximum degree of lung expansion and to secure the greatest amount of life-giving properties of air to the system. Proper breathing exercises allow us to efficiently accumulate the maximum amount of mana. This is essential to health and to the practice of Huna.
Categories Of Breathing
Upper Breathing. This is the most common method of breathing in Western society. This is also the worst type of breathing and is the source of many of our problems. One breathing this way elevates the ribs, collarbone and shoulders while drawing the abdomen in. The abdomen pulls up and pushes against the diaphragm, raising it.
In Upper Breathing only the upper part of the chest and lungs are used. This is the smallest area and so only the smallest amount of air enters the lungs. Also, because the diaphragm is being raised, there can be no expansion in that direction. Go back and review the mechanics of breathing. It will become quite obvious that Upper Breathing uses a maximum amount of effort and energy to obtain a minimum amount of benefit.
Upper breathing wastes energy. People who breath this way (most of our modern culture) are weak and unhealthy. Even athletes who should know better tend to breath this way and suffer because of it. Respiratory diseases and vocal problems can be directly traced to this manner of breathing which strains the delicate organs and results in harsh voices. People who breath this way often resort to mouth breathing which increases their problems.
Mid Breathing. This method of breathing is similar to Upper Breathing and only slightly better. In Mid Breathing the diaphragm is pushed up and the abdomen drawn in while the chest is raised somewhat and the chest partially expanded. The results are much the same.
Deep Breathing. This method of breathing is far better than either of the two preceding methods. Deep Breathing is well known among those who recognize the importance of breath in health and meditation. Many systems of breathing have been built around Deep Breathing. Many have benefited and much money has been made on Deep Breathing. It is, however, only a part of proper breathing. Deep Breathing must be understood before we can proceed to Complete Breathing.
You saw that in Upper and Mid Breathing the diaphragm is raised. The diaphragm is the great partition muscle separating the chest from the abdomen and its contents. At rest the diaphragm is like a dome above the abdomen. When it is used, the diaphragm is lowered to press down on the abdomen and force it out.
In Deep Breathing the diaphragm is used and the lungs are able to move more freely. This has led some to tout Deep Breathing as the best method as it is definitely superior to the previous methods.
The problem is that in none of these three methods do the lungs become completely filled with air. Even in Deep Breathing only a portion of the lungs are filled at best. Upper Breathing fills only the upper portion of the lungs. Mid fills only the middle and some of the upper part. Deep Breathing fills only the lower and middle parts.
It should be evident that a method which fills the entire lung space will be of the greatest value in allowing us to absorb the greatest quantity of oxygen and to generate the most mana. The Complete Breath is the best method known.
The "Kahuna Breath"
Complete Breathing. This method of breathing combines all the good points of Upper, Mid, and Deep Breathing while eliminating the objectionable features of each. It brings into play the entire breathing apparatus, every part of the lungs, every air-cell, and every respiratory muscle. The entire respiratory system responds to Complete Breathing and the maximum amount of benefit is derived from the minimum expenditure of energy. The chest cavity expands to its normal limits in all directions and every part of the breathing mechanism performs its natural function.
In Complete Breathing all the respiratory muscles are completely called into play. The other types of breathing use only a portion of these muscles. This means that the space for the lungs to expand increases and the muscles give support to the organs as needed. The diaphragm is under complete control and is able to function properly.
In the Complete Breath the lower ribs are pulled slightly downward by the diaphragm while other muscles hold them in place and the intercostal muscles pull them outward. This combined action increases the mid chest cavity to its maximum capacity. The upper ribs are lifted and forced outward by the intercostal muscles, increasing the capacity of the upper chest to its maximum capacity
The Kahuna "Complete Breathing" Technique
Complete Breathing should not be forced. This is a return to nature. Native people and infants breath this way naturally and that should be our goal. Once you have learned Complete Breathing it is not necessary to completely fill the lungs with every inhalation. This is an exercise for developing healthy habits and to be used several times a day in a controlled manner. With regular practice this manner of breathing will become a habit.
(1) Stand or sit erect. Inhale steadily through the nostrils. Fill the lower part of the lungs first by descending the diaphragm and thereby putting pressure on the lower abdominal organs, pushing the front wall of the abdomen forward. Next fill the middle part of the lungs by expanding the chest, pushing out the lower ribs and the breastbone. Finally fill the upper part of the lungs by protruding the upper part of the chest and thereby lifting the chest and the upper seven pairs of ribs. During this final movement the lower abdomen will be brought in slightly. This movement supports the lungs and helps fill the upper part of the lungs.
This breath is presented as three distinct movements, but the inhalation should be continuous, even, and fluid by expanding the entire chest, from the lowered diaphragm to the highest point of the chest in a uniform movement. Try to achieve an even, rolling action as you practice.
(2) Hold the breath for a few seconds.
(3) Exhale slowly through the mouth. As you do so hold the chest firmly in place, draw the abdomen in a little and lift it up slowly as the air leaves. When exhalation is complete you may relax the chest and abdomen. This requires a little practice at first, but it can easily become automatic.
Practice Complete Breathing in front of a mirror if possible with your hands over your abdomen so that you can feel the all movements.
Rhythm. Once you have the basic structure of Complete Breathing mastered you can begin rhythmic breathing. Try the Ha breath. Ha means four and it means breath. It is also the sound you should make when exhaling during the mana generating stage of the Ha Rite.
The four is divided into a ratio of 1:1:2 for the basic Complete Breath. This means you inhale for a count of one, hold the breath for a count of one and then exhale for a count of two. You hold the breath to allow full oxygenation of the blood and to activate the lymph system and you should take twice as long to exhale because that is when you are eliminating toxins.
It's like Huna people have a reason for doing everything!
Use your heartbeat to establish a natural rhythm. You may want to start inhaling for a count of four beats, hold for four, and then exhale for eight. As you develop you can raise the number of beats for longer, slower breathing. This takes time. I started with a four count and now average an inhalation time of about thirty seconds, holding for thirty, and exhaling for sixty. Trained Yogis can take several minutes for one breath. Your breathing will improve with increased lung capacity and there's no need to overdo it.
The Complete Breath is the foundation for all breathing. It should become your natural way of breathing, though as mentioned before you need not take it to the extreme with every breath. You should become comfortable with the Complete Breath, doing it naturally and evenly before proceeding with the following breathing exercises.
Breathing Exercises
What follows are some Yoga breathing exercises which when combined with Huna and Complete Breathing with contribute to great health, wealth, wisdom, and happiness.
The Kahuna "Cleansing Breath"
This breathing exercise ventilates and cleans the lungs. It stimulates the cells and tones the respiratory organs. You may conclude the other breathing exercises with the Cleansing Breath as it refreshes the entire system. It can be used after speaking or singing to rest the repertory system.
(1) Inhale a Complete Breath.
(2) Hold the breath a few seconds.
(3) Pucker the lips as if your were whistling without swelling the cheeks. Exhale a little air through the small opening with considerable force, stop for a moment (retaining the air), and then exhale a little more. Repeat this exhalation pattern until the air is completely out.
The Cleansing breath can be used any time you are tired. I use this breath any time I have been around smoke or other air pollutants.
The Chanting Breath
This technique can be used by speakers, singers, or anyone to improve their voice. This exercise provides power, control, and clarity. This is to be used only as an exercise and not as a regulate form of breathing.
(1) Inhale a Complete Breath very slowly and steadily taking as much time as possible for inhalation.
(2) Hold the breath a few seconds.
(3) Exhale quickly in one vigorous breath with the mouth wide open. This should be done instantly and your mouth should be wide enough to insert four fingers vertically between the teeth, or as close to this ideal as you can comfortably get.
(4) Rest the lungs with the Cleansing Breath.
The Oxygenizing Breath
This breathing exercise is designed to stimulate the air cells in the lungs. Do not overdo it. You will likely feel dizzy the first few times you do this. If you smoke or have smoked, do this only under supervision because you can pass out from the incredible rush of oxygen which your body is not used to. When I first tried this exercise I was about fourteen, spent hours each day riding (and racing) bicycles, and even I got dizzy the first couple times. Go easy and if you do get dizzy, walk around a little and discontinue the exercise for a while.
(1) Stand erect with your hands on your chest.
(2) Inhale a complete breath very gradually and slowly. As you do, gently tap your chest with the finger tips. Move your hands constantly so as to stimulate every inch of the lungs.
(3) When the lungs are filled, hold the breath and pat the chest with your palms. As you progress you can pat your chest more and more firmly.
(4) Practice the Cleansing Breath.
This exercise is very stimulating to the whole body. Many of the air cells in the lungs become inactive over time from incorrect breathing, smoking, etc. This exercise when done regularly can stimulate those cells back into activity over time. It is a very worthwhile exercise.
